Mondine power

20/5/2006

Fiamma Fumana
Onda,
Mescal s.i.p.

Patchanka and rice

Today is a radio day: we are just back from Radio popolare in Milan, where we enacted an interview-with-performance within the show Patchanka, which is broadcast in network all over the country. We are working in close connection with the radio these days, because we will feature in their annual party, Extrafesta, at the Idroscalo Aquapark in Milan on Friday May 26th. It's a big event, with a lot of food and a lot of music: this year's theme is rice cultures, so it is only fitting that we should bring there our joint show with the Choir of the rice weeders of Novi! The party lasts the whole weekend: other featured artists are Anjelique Kidjo and Ojos de Brujo.

Heading for the Eternal City

Yes, my friends, tomorrow we have no less than the Rome show. Though promotionally maybe not the most important gig in your typical Italian tour, it is one of the most pleasant - especially in the spring. I'll spend an extra day in the Eternal City to attend a couple of meetings, then we have more shows in Reggio, Roncade and Verona, so I'll be out for what remains of this week.

Going to Rome is always a pleasure. Tomorrow it will be more of a pleasure than usual, because we have a brand new President (who pronounced his oath just yesterday) and a new Prime Minister. Although not yet voted in by the new parliament, the latter was officially asked by the President to form the new government just today.

The new Prime Minister does not own any TV network, newspaper or major-league football team. I suppose one must be thankful for these little blessings, that should add to the pleasure of the sunshine in the Eternal City.

Mexico as seen by an accordionist and occasional traveller

Mexico is... Mexico. Everything political is larger than life. In Europe we have demonstrations: last week, as we were there, there was a protest of flower sellers (the government wanted them out of the place where they had been traditionally doing their trade) in a village called San Salvador Atenco that led to two field battles between demonstrator and police. The first one led to the death of a 14-year old boy and 12 policemen being detained by the protesters; for the second one the police brought 3,000 men in and beat up everyone in sight, including sexual humiliations for the women and a lot of fairly obvious lying by the media (see the report on Indymedia). But again, in Europe we would sort of swallow all of these lies, with a sort of we-know-it's-rubbish-but-it's-the-only-game-in-town attidude; in Mexico Subcomandante Marcos (who now styles himself "Delegado Cero") gave the press bullets used on the battle site, that obviously come from policemen's guns, and therefore disproved the declaration of the police force that thay had gone into Atenco unarmed.

Yes, Mexico has a lot of energy and a lot of potential for positive change... a lot more than us, in fact. But I am quite sad by the division I saw between the EZLN and the political left (the left-wing candidate, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, looks like he might win the presidential elections on 2nd July ). Basically Marcos is saying that there is no difference between presidential candidates. Well, I am not Mexican, but it seems to me there is some kind of difference between Calderon and AMLO. It seems there is a hell of a lot more difference than between Berlusconi and Prodi: Prodi is certainly not a working class candidate. But there is a BIG difference, believe me, between being governed by Berlusconi and being governed by Prodi.

Seen with the eyes of a non-Mexican accordionist and occasional traveller, the Otra campana of the EZLN seems really good because it is trying to change the operating system of politics. But a victory of AMLO in the presidential elections might bring about changes in the right direction even within the existing operating system. He did well as mayor of Mexico City, and a change was obvious to its inhabitants.

And another question: Mexican media are full of Marcos. But what happened to the EZLN Comandancia?

Jet lag and coffee

Back from Mexico, after a hard week's work. A lot of tech problems have taken some of the fun off this week, though the last shows were finally good (we sold out our CDs... again). The Ollin Kan festival ended with a huge jam session lead by Gangbe Brass Band, with everyone on stage... good fun. Then we get back, and Alitalia left our luggage in Paris!
Now I am home, trying to fight jet lag with proper (at last!) coffee.

Radio Onda Mexicana

Mexican summer rains are early this year, so that we are supposed to get showers every night :-(. It certainly rained yesterday night during our first presentation! Despite the weather, I feel very much at home being back to Mexico, which I visited in 1995. At the time I got involved with this sort of informal referendum that EZLN was organising, the Consulta Nacional para la Paz y la Democracia.

This morning festival director Andres Solano took me for an interview with Ibero Radio, a really good radio station connected with the Ibero-American University. That's me in the studio with co-hosts Agustin and Daniel. And tomorrow is main stage...

Que viva Mexico!

... as an old song of mine used to say. We are just getting out of jet lag after an horribly long journey, and getting ready for our first show (which is tonight). Here the festival seems so well organized that we have a very full daily schedule. Yesterday it was press conference and reception, and given the sheer size of this city (20 million inhabitants!) we spend a lot of time on yellow schoolbuses with "Orgullo de Tlalpan" painted on the side.

God news from Italy: we have entered the Radio Deejay chart of the 50 songs most played by the network. It's the most important commercial radio network in Italy, so it means quite a lot of visibility.

... e buonanotte!
